Student Led
Our role in sustainability
Each of us, individually, play an integral part in the wider environment and accordingly should act as good citizens of Earth. This University commits to support and promote such sustainability citizenship amongst its student and staff population. UCC is proud to have been the first University in the world to receive the An Taisce Green Campus award, and the University sees the Green Campus programme as a significant component of its sustainability efforts. The University strives to promote sustainability citizenship through its Green Campus programme in a manner that is student-led, research informed and practice focused.
Furthering the promotion of sustainability citizenship beyond the Green Campus programme and through all aspects of University life is key to the full implementation of the sustainability strategy.
Community Market
Our Community Market launched in 2021. The ethos of the market is centred around promoting circularity, involving students, staff and the general public and creating a real sense of community on campus. We had a wide range of stallholders ranging from sustainable consumption focused stalls to activist stalls such as Extinction Rebellion Cork. Communicating the benefits of circularity is so important to us at UCC Green Campus so our aim is to demonstrate that products can reused repaired and remanufactured while at the same time making this concept accessible to the UCC community. The Community Market aims to support Cork’s creative community allowing them to share their talents. It was great to finally see the fruits of all their labour, the creation of which had gone on behind closed doors for many months.

Below are some of the exciting stalls at the Community Markets selling art, jewellery and sustainable natural products, focusing on zero waste by using refillable containers and recyclable packaging.
